Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” Goes 5X Platinum in the United States

The biggest hit of Ed Sheeran’s career is officially 5x platinum in the United States.

“Thinking Out Loud,” which spent several weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, formally received the RIAA certification on July 7, 2015. The song, which had not previously received any certifications, also retroactively earned gold, platinum, 2x platinum, 3x platinum and 4x platinum marks.

Under the terms of the RIAA’s digital singles program, a 5x platinum certification confirms a US unit total in excess of 5 million. A unit is equal to one paid download or 100 streams.

Prior to “Thinking Out Loud,” no Sheeran single had earned more than a double platinum certification. His singles “Don’t” and “The a team” both hold that distinction.
