Hot 100: Maddie and Tae’s “Girl in a Country Song” Debuts at #71

Thanks to rapidly growing airplay and sales figures and a full week of video availability, Maddie and Tae’s “Girl in a Country Song” jumps into this week’s edition of the Billboard Hot 100.

The duo’s single, which functions as a retaliation to the cliched, objectifying sentiments commonly echoed in “bro country” songs, arrives at #71 on this week’s Hot 100. It follows Jessie J + Ariana Grande + Nicki Minaj’s “Bang Bang” as the week’s third-best debut.

While nearly 30,000 weekly digital sales and a climb to #31 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart did not hurt matters, the song’s buzzworthy video also played a pivotal role in its Hot 100 climb.

That video, which reverses roles by putting male performers in the skimpy outfits and sexualized activities typically reserved for the “girl in a country song,” has garnered considerable buzz and nearly 4 million YouTube/Vevo views.
