New Music: Rihanna, Eminem Re-Team on “The Monster”

Three years ago, ubiquitous superstar Rihanna joined a revived Eminem on “Love the Way You Lie.” Pop magic resulted.

The track, which was co-written by Eminem, Alex da Kid and Skylar Grey, surged to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, achieved a Diamond sales certification from the RIAA and spurred a sequel for Rihanna’s “Loud” album. Even more so than “Not Afraid,” a smash hit in its own right, “Lie” propelled Em’s “Recovery” to must-own status and re-established the performer as the game’s leading rap-pop crossover.

It was a monster.

Fittingly, “The Monster” is the title of the duo’s latest collaboration, which released Monday as a promo track for Eminem’s upcoming “The Marshall Mathers LP 2.” With a more furious tempo, looser vocal delivery and a less somber tone, the song makes no attempt to mirror “Lie.” It does, however, reaffirm the chemistry they first revealed on the 2010 smash.

Released via Sound Cloud, the new track is available to stream below. Eminem’s “MMLP2″ releases on November 5.
