“No Strings Attached” Opens Solidly at Box Office, “Green Hornet” Behind

Though its total came in below late-week forecasts, new release “No Strings Attached” still delivered a solid gross in its Friday box office opening.

The R-rated romantic comedy, which stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, opened to the tune of $7.3 million at the Friday box office. That places the film on course for a weekend total of around $20 million, allowing it to comfortably escape the recent string of rom-com disappointments.

Still, given the surplus of late-week projections eyeing a Friday total of more than $8 million, there was definitely room for a better performance.

Last week’s winner “The Green Hornet” earned $5.1 million for second place, representing a fairly steep, albeit expected, drop from last week’s opening take. The film should, nonetheless, comfortably earn second for the weekend, as “The Dilemma” was comfortably behind with only $3 million on Friday.
