Miesha Tate is hanging up the gloves.
Following her second straight loss, the former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion announced her retirement from competition.
Tate made the unexpected announcement immediately following her UFC 205 loss to Raquel Pennington.
“It’s not my time anymore – it’s the future’s time,” declared Tate, who confirmed that the decision to retire was a response to her loss Saturday night.
Tate lost via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). She was convincingly outstruck and could not develop enough of an advantage from a grappling standpoint. Her decision to pull guard in round three actually backfired; not intimidated by Tate’s ground game, Pennington fought off some initial submission attempts before developing a ground advantage of her own.
Tate defeated Holly Holm to win the title at UFC 196 earlier this year. Her first defense was unsuccessful; she was dominantly defeated by Amanda Nunes at UFC 200.
