Based on its rapid ascent into the Top 10 on iTunes and Top 40 at pop radio, Ed Sheeran’s “Sing” clearly had no trouble resonating with audiences. But in the interest of giving the tune an extra little push, Sheeran performed the number during debut on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” this weekend.
Sheeran devoted the first of two his two “SNL” performances to the Pharrell-produced track, which began working its way back up the iTunes Top 10 in the hours following the broadcast. With a six-figure sales count and a sizable audience at radio, “Sing,” the lead single from Sheeran’s upcoming album “x,” is expected to debut in the Top 40 of Billboard’s Hot 100 this week.
But for as new as “Sing” is to music fans, it was not the newest Sheeran song performed on the show. Instead of turning to an earlier fan favorite for his second number, Sheeran instead opted to play “Don’t.” Also from “x,” the song was not even available for purchase on iTunes as of press time.
