Shortly after releasing “Team” as the second official single from “Pure Heroine,” teen pop sensation Lorde assured fans she had not forgotten about her earlier standout “Tennis Court.”
“team leaked. tc [“Tennis Court”] will have its time in the sun. x,” Tweeted Lorde in a simultaneous justification of her label’s decision to promote “Team” and implication that “Tennis Court,” which was released before Lorde became a household name, would eventually ship as a single in the United States.
“Tennis Court” will apparently have to again wait for its time in the sun.
On the heels of its inclusion in the Winter Olympics and promotional campaign for the “Vikings” television series, “Glory and Gore,” not “Tennis Court,” has reportedly been named the third single from Lorde’s breakthrough “Pure Heroine.”
Billboard confirmed the new plans with label Republic Records.
The sudden change comes less than two weeks before “Tennis Court” was due to hit alternative radio as the official follow-up to “Team” and “Royals.”
All Access, which reports on the radio industry, has already revised its listing to confirm that “Glory and Gore” will go for radio adds during the week of March 11.
While All Access still says “Tennis Court” will hit Top 40 radio in April, Billboard’s report suggests that claim will soon be revised as well.
In moving forward with “Glory and Gore” as the new single, Lorde’s team proves it learned something from Katy Perry’s recent misfire.
Instead of releasing the red-hot “Dark Horse” as the second single from “PRISM,” Perry went with unassuming ballad “Unconditionally.” Though successful by most standards, the song flopped by Katy Perry standards and became her first single since 2009 to fall short of the Top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
When finally released as the third single, “Dark Horse” rapidly shot to the top of the charts, suggesting that Perry could have kept her streak of Top 10s alive had she instead gone with “Horse” as the follow-up to “Roar.”
