Demetrious Johnson Claims First UFC Flyweight Championship; UFC 152 Results

Those listening to Joe Rogan’s commentary, which contained an endless supply of praise for the speed and technique of Demetrious Johnson, were likely shocked when Bruce Buffer announced a split decision result in the first-ever UFC Flyweight Championship fight.

But when push came to shove, the result came out as expected–Demetrious Johnson defeated Joseph Benavidez to become the 125-pound champion.

Though Johnson was caught in a very deep submission in the fourth round, the rest of the close battle ultimately seemed to fall in favor of his superior speed and impressive assortment of offense.

The action between the small competitors did not always translate well for the live crowd, which booed on a number of occasions, but those watching on television saw a close, hard-fought battle between two hungry challengers. When all was said and done, though, Johnson’s combination of speed on the feet and successful takedown attempts gave him the split decision victory.
