“Murphy Brown” Premiere Delivers Disappointing Ratings

“Murphy Brown” attracted an underwhelming premiere audience, particularly in adults 18-49.

CBS’ “Murphy Brown” revival did not spark anywhere near the same interest as ABC’s 2018 “Roseanne” update. Thursday’s premiere delivered underwhelming live+same-day numbers.

According to fast national data posted by Showbuzz, “Murphy Brown” opened with a 1.1 adults 18-49 rating and averaged 7.42 million viewers.

The demo rating would be unremarkable for any major sitcom launch. Given the hype surrounding the “Murphy Brown” reboot (not to mention the legacy surrounding the show), the number is particularly disappointing in context.

Due to the long runtime, the numbers may be subject to a larger-than-typical revision in the finals. The revision will not, however, be enough to change the performance assessment.

CBS’ Thursday lineup opened with “The Big Bang Theory” (2.1, 11.74 million) and “Young Sheldon” (1.6, 10.08 million). “Mom,” the direct lead-in for “Murphy Brown,” posted a 1.3 and 7.99 million at 9PM.

“SWAT” closed the night with a 0.7 and 4.98 million.
