Update: The owner of the @weezerafrica Twitter account was evidently not the only fan interested in a Weezer cover of Toto’s “Africa.”

The fan-demanded cover, which launched Tuesday, reached #1 on the US iTunes sales chart Wednesday morning. It occupies that spot as of 10:05AM ET.

Weezer’s version of the classic dethroned Shawn Mendes’ “In My Blood,” which had ruled for the past few days.

Responding to a long-standing request from fans (including the @weezerafrica Twitter account), Weezer finally released a cover of Toto’s “Africa.”

The recording is, predictably, generating interest from the music market.

Weezer’s “Africa” is #9 on the all-genre US iTunes sales chart as of press time at 11:40PM ET Tuesday. It is #2 on the YouTube Trending Chart.

In addition to a positive reaction from fans, the cover received a seal of approval from Toto. The band Tweeted “well done” alongside a Pitchfork article about the song.

Audio for the recording, which uses the original @weezerafrica Tweet as its cover art, follows:
