Ratings Update: ABC’s “Designated Survivor” Starts Solidly

Update: ABC’s “Designated Survivor” got off to a solid start.

According to final national data posted by Showbuzz, Wednesday’s broadcast drew a 2.2 adults 18-49 and 10.04 million total viewers. It was the 10PM timeslot’s #1 show in both columns.

It, moreover, was the entire night’s #2 program in viewers. Only “Empire” drew a larger audience.

The show skewed fairly old, and the overall viewership figure is more impressive than the adults 18-49 rating. Still, a 2.2 adults 18-49 rating for a 10PM drama in 2016 is definitely not something at which to sneeze — especially if “Designated Survivor” can stay in that general range moving forward.

ABC’s Wednesday lineup also included “The Goldbergs” (2.0, 6.90 million), “Speechless” (2.0, 7.38 million), “Modern Family” (2.6, 8.24 million), and “black-ish” (2.0, 6.39 million).

ABC’s “Designated Survivor” attracted a strong opening week sampling.

According to metered market data posted by Programming Insider, the new Kiefer Sutherland vehicle drew a 7.2 overnight household rating. The figure was the best in the 10PM timeslot — and ties that posted by “Empire” for the best figure attained Wednesday night.

“Designated Survivor” almost certainly skewed older than “Empire,” but there is still reason to believe the show posted a solid adults 18-49 figure. The fast national ratings report, which will include preliminary adults 18-49 and viewership numbers, is due by 11:15AM ET.

ABC’s Wednesday night lineup also included “The Goldbergs” (4.9 overnight household rating), “Speechless” (5.1), “Modern Family” (5.9), and “black-ish” (4.5).
