New release “Don’t Breathe” easily claims the top spot on this week’s US weekend box office chart.

The critically acclaimed horror film will earn an estimated $26.1 million through the close of business Sunday. The tally more than doubles of that of the #2 film.

“Suicide Squad,” that #2 film, added $12.1 million to its haul this weekend. It had spent the past three weeks at #1.

Up one place, “Kubo And The Two Strings” grabs #3 on the strength of its $7.9 million in weekend receipts. “Sausage Party” follows at #4 (-2) with $7.7 million.

Given that predecessor “The Mechanic” only earned $11.4 million in its opening weekend, expectations were not high for “Mechanic: Resurrection.” It did not prove those soft projections wrong. “Resurrection” earned a mere $7.5 million and debuts at #5 on the weekend chart.
