Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” Receives 5X Platinum Certification in the US

Snow Patrol [Ellen van Bodegom]

The success of Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” is very well-documented, but it had not been formally certified with the RIAA prior to this week.

That changed Monday, when the RIAA formally recognized “Chasing Cars” as a 5x platinum single.

The 5x distinction confirms a US unit total of at least 5 million; one unit is equal to 1 paid download or 100 streams.

As “Chasing Cars” had not been previously certified, it retroactively received 4x platinum, 3x platinum, 2x platinum, platinum, and gold certifications on December 14.

Cut from Snow Patrol’s “Eyes Open,” “Chasing Cars” peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
