Ratings Update: FOX’s “Empire” Tops CMA Awards, Wins Night in A18-49 (Updated)

Final Ratings Update: For the first time this season, “Empire” did not rank as broadcast television’s Wednesday leader in total viewership.

It did, however, retain its crown in the key adults 18-49 demographic.

This week’s “Empire” drew a 4.6 adults 18-49 rating with 11.677 million viewers. The performance was down from the previous showing (4.8, 12.281 million) but strong by any reasonable standard.

“Empire” notably topped all other Wednesday shows — including ABC’s annual CMA Awards — in adults 18-49. The CMA broadcast averaged a 3.8 adults 18-49 rating from 8-11PM; it posted a 4.1 opposite “Empire” in the 9PM hour.

ABC’s awards show did, however, win the night in total viewership. The three-hour telecast reached an average of 13.620 million total viewers.

— FOX led into “Empire” with “Rosewood” (1.5, 5.049 million).

Update: While it was not the night’s most-watched program, FOX’s “Empire” once again ranked as broadcast television’s Wednesday leader in adults 18-49.

Per fast national data, this week’s “Empire” posted a 4.6 adults 18-49 rating with 11.559 million total viewers. The numbers trail those of the previous episode (4.8, 12.281 million) but are strong by any reasonable standard.

The demo rating, notably, bests that achieved by ABC’s three-hour CMA Awards show. Airing from 8-11PM, the 49th Annual edition of the country music awards ceremony averaged a 3.8 in the key young adults demo. It posted a 4.1 (with 14.426 million total viewers) in the “Empire”-filled 9PM hour.

The CMA Awards show did, however, win the night in total viewership.

— FOX led into “Empire” with “Rosewood” (1.5, 5.064 million).
===========================

While it ceded its overnight household rating throne, FOX’s “Empire” still fared impressively Wednesday night.

Returning from a brief hiatus, “Empire” posted a 7.9 overnight household rating. That trails the 8.2 posted by the previous episode — and is the lowest since the first half of the first season — but still represents a strong showing.

It also signposts a characteristically strong performance in adults 18-49 and total viewership.

Wednesday’s “Empire” notably faced competition from ABC’s 49th Annual CMA Awards broadcast. The awards show won the night with an 8.2 overnight household rating from 8-11PM.

Given its younger skew, “Empire” may, however, have won the night in the key adults 18-49 demographic. That data, along with a total viewership figure, is due by 11:15AM ET.

— FOX led into “Empire” with “Rosewood” (3.9 overnight household rating).
