Ratings Update: ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” Rises from Low, “American Crime” Sinks

Update: According to final broadcast data, Thursday’s edition of “Grey’s Anatomy,” which aired in its old 9PM timeslot, drew a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating with 7.42 million viewers.

The performance represents a welcome rebound from last week’s episode, which settled for a 1.9 with 6.64 million viewers. Both represented lows for the series.

Also enough to fuel “Grey’s Anatomy” to a first place timeslot finish in the demo and second in viewership (behind CBS’ “Mom”/”The Big Bang Theory” re-run tandem), the performance was not stellar in comparison to the historical “Grey’s” standard.

It was not even strong in comparison to the reduced standard of the current season. The viewership mark was the third-lowest for a “Grey’s” episode this season.

— ABC led into “Grey’s” with a rebroadcast of the show’s pilot episode. It drew a 1.1 with 4.66 million viewers.

— It led out of “Grey’s” with an original edition of “American Crime.” The freshman drama drew a series low 0.9 rating with 4.40 million viewers.

Airing away from “The Big Bang Theory”–and in its old 9PM timeslot–Thursday’s “Grey’s Anatomy” enjoyed a rebound from last week’s series low ratings performance.

It did not, however, deliver slam dunk numbers.

Per fast national data, Thursday’s “Grey’s” scored a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating with 7.33 million viewers.

Low in the historical context of the series, the numbers do comfortably best the low marks posted by the April 2 episode.

That episode, which aired in the 8PM slot, scored a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating with 6.64 million viewers.

However soft by historical “Grey’s” standards, the 2.1 demo rating was network television’s strongest during the 9-10PM hour. CBS’ tandem of “Mom” and a “Big Bang Theory” re-run averaged a 1.9, while NBC’s “The Blacklist” re-run (0.8), FOX’s “Backstrom” (0.8) and The CW’s “The Flash” re-run (0.3) were out of competitive the mix.

Barring an upward adjustment in the final ratings report, this week’s viewership total will nonetheless represent the second-worst of the season.

— While this week’s “Grey’s” effectively mirrored what “Scandal” drew in the timeslot last week (2.1, 7.27 million viewers), 10PM lead-out “American Crime” slipped to a series low this week. After scoring a 1.1 with 4.69 million viewers last week, it fell to a 0.9 with 4.42 million this week.

— ABC led into the 9PM “Grey’s” original with an 8PM encore (1.1, 4.75 million).
