Maroon 5’s “Sugar” is Pop Radio’s Greatest Airplay Gainer

Due to be officially crowned a top 25 hit on the Sunday evening edition of Mediabase’s pop radio airplay chart, Maroon 5’s new single “Sugar” is also the format’s greatest airplay gainer.

According to Mediabase’s Sunday morning data, which will differ only slightly from that reported on the final evening chart, the song’s weekly spin count of 3,673 bests that of last week by 2,086. No other pop song made a gain so dramatic.

“Sugar,” the third single from the band’s “V,” hopes to follow in the chart-topping footsteps of its predecessor “Animals.”

The song in possession of the format’s second-greatest gain is also a third single. “Style,” the latest from Taylor Swift’s “1989,” improved its weekly spin count by a healthy 1,821 this week. Credited with a total of 4,507 weekly spins, “Style” is #21 on the Sunday morning airplay chart.

Ed Sheeran’s #8 “Thinking Out Loud” added 1,531 to its weekly total; it commanded 11,185 spins during the January 18-24 tracking period. Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk (featuring Bruno Mars),” which will officially be crowned #1 Sunday evening, enjoyed a boost of 1,501 spins (to a weekly total of 16,311).

Meghan Trainor’s “Lips are Movin,” which is the week’s fifth-greatest gainer, saw its weekly spin count rise by 1,347. It grabbed the week’s #7 position on the strength of its 11,250 weekly spins.
