“The Hanging Tree” Sales Could Hit 150K; Strong Hot 100 Debut Expected

James Newton Howard’s “Mockingjay – Part 1” song “The Hanging Tree,” which features vocals from Jennifer Lawrence, is pacing for an impressive debut on the Billboard Hot 100.

Signposted by its lingering presence in the upper reaches of the iTunes all-genre single sales chart–where it is currently #2–“Tree” could sell more than 150,000 copies in the current tracking week.

Billboard says that should be enough for a debut on the Hot 100, which also incorporates airplay and streaming data.

“The Hanging Tree” represents a commercial music bright spot for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” which saw its official, Lorde-curated soundtrack debut softly on the Billboard 200 album sales chart.
