Sam Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One” Sales Surge After “Tonight Show”

Update: Sam Smith also performed on the “TODAY” show this week, which surely contributed to his songs’ surge on iTunes.

Over the past year, it has become clear that a performance on a late night talk show, “Saturday Night Live” or even a major music awards show does no longer assures more than a slight sales boost for the featured number.

But when one performs at the caliber of Sam Smith, the boost can still be very significant.

Tuesday, Smith performed his new single “I’m Not the Only One” on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” While the song, which is quickly gaining steam at radio, had already established a position within the Top 30 on iTunes, it was not flirting with a top ten position prior to Smith’s performance.

As of press time, it is already up to #10 on the iTunes all-genre sales chart. Having made steady gains since Smith’s performance aired in the early morning hours Wednesday, the song has charged past buzzworthy singles like Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t,” One Direction’s “Steal My Girl” and Echosmith’s “Cool Kids” on the iTunes chart.

It currently trails Smith’s previous single–and multi-format blockbuster–“Stay with Me” by one place on the chart. Of note is the fact that “Stay with Me” also appears to have received a notable sales boost in the wake of Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One” performance.

His debut studio release “In the Lonely Hour,” meanwhile, is #7 on the iTunes album sales chart.
