“Total Recall” Underwhelms at Box Office, “Dark Knight Rises” Could Win Again

The poorly-rated “Total Recall” remake is only off to a modest start at the box office, and it appears “The Dark Knight Rises” could hold onto the crown for a third week.

Early estimates show that “Recall” will earn in the $10 million ballpark on Friday and fall short of $30 million for the total weekend. Though not a bomb, that is hardly an inspiring total given the $125 million budget and months of promotion. It also looks poised to fall short of the projected $32 million haul for weekend three of “Rises.”

If that projection holds, “TDKR” will land in the $350 million cumulative range by the end of Sunday. By comparison, “The Dark Knight” had attained $393.8 million after its third weekend, while “The Avengers” had escalated to $457.7 million.

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” should earn about $6-7 million on Friday for a weekend total of just under $20 million. Its two predecessors, which both opened in March, earned $22.1 million and $23.8 million, respectively, in their debut 2010 and 2011 outings.
