One Direction to Perform on “Tonight Show” with Classroom Instruments

Update: While One Direction’s appearance was formally advertised for Tuesday’s “The Tonight Show,” the classroom instruments performance actually aired on Monday’s episode. The group joined Jimmy Fallon and The Roots to perform “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”

No, One Direction will not be the official musical guest on the December 23 edition of “The Tonight Show.” That honor goes to Big Sean, who will perform with accompaniment from in-house band The Roots.

The popular boy band will, however, make music on the show. During Saturday’s “SNL,” NBC aired a promotional piece for the episode and confirmed that One Direction will perform in the “Tonight Show Music Room.”

For those unaware, “Tonight Show Music Room” performances involve recreating popular hits with classroom instruments. Names like Carly Rae Jepsen, Robin Thicke, Idina Menzel and Meghan Trainor have performed their blockbuster hits in that setting (some as part of Fallon’s “Late Night”).

One Direction’s “Tonight Show” episode airs on the same night as its primetime NBC TV special. Jerry Seinfeld and the aforementioned Big Sean will also appear on that edition of “Tonight.”
