Miley Cyrus Defends “Awesome” Lorde Against “Mean” People

Since Lorde’s breakthrough “Royals” overtook Miley Cyrus’ career-defining “Wrecking Ball” on the iTunes Single Sales chart, some of Miley Cyrus’ most diehard fans have been on the attack.

From attacking her looks to wishing her death, a specific breed of “Smilers” has made it abundantly clear that Lorde leapfrogged the wrong pop star on her way to the throne.

Adopting a lighthearted approach to the hate, the New Zealand teen joked about the animosity (“wo #1 on US itunes. even if it lasts an hour i feel HAPPY. downside is all these miley fans telling me they’re gonna stab my rotting corpse”) before re-Tweeting some of the more absurd comments:

Despite Lorde’s initial uncertainty about her song’s tenure at the top, “Royals” remains the number one single on iTunes. The differential between its sales pace and that of Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” has, in fact, grown throughout the day.

And despite angry comments from some of her fans, Cyrus Tweeted support for America’s hottest-selling music act Thursday.

“@lordemusic why r people so mean??? Ps your music is awesome,” wrote Cyrus, returning the respect Lorde demonstrated last month for the former “Hannah Montana.”

Shortly after “Wrecking Ball” released in August, Lorde Tweeted support for the song’s “on point” melodies.
