Having barely given the music industry enough time to process its impressive climb into the top ten, Lorde’s breakthrough smash “Royals” has already moved into the top three of Billboard’s Hot 100.
Noting the song’s significant improvements in digital sales, streams and airplay, the music trade officially announced the jump to number three. It ranked eighth on last week’s chart.
The multi-format smash, which has conquered Billboard’s Alternative and Rock charts, is accelerating its momentum at a perfect time for the New Zealand singer-songwriter. “Pure Heroine,” Lorde’s full-length debut, hits American shelves on September 30.
Despite its refusal to slow down, “Royals” still faces a very daunting challenger in its pursuit of the number one position. Katy Perry’s smash “Roar,” which is still out-selling “Royals,” spends a second consecutive week atop the Hot 100. It again beats out Robin Thicke’s slowing–but still immensely popular–“Blurred Lines.”
Jay-Z’s “Holy Grail” lands behind “Royals” at number four, besting Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” (the artist’s first top five song). Lana Del Rey & Cedric Gervais’ “Summertime Sadness” accelerates to number six, besting Lady Gaga’s “Applause,” Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” Capital Cities’ “Safe and Sound” and Eminem’s “Berzerk.”
