“Riddick” Wins Light Weekend Box Office Race

Despite its predictably-modest performance, “Riddick” took advantage of light interest from weekend moviegoers to claim first place at the box office.

The Vin Diesel vehicle earned $18.7 million, which trails the $24.3 million opening tally for “The Chronicles of Riddick.” That film’s predecessor “Pitch Black” earned $11.6 million in 2000.

“Lee Daniels’ ‘The Butler'” held onto second place with $8.9 million, besting the $8.1 million for “Instructions Not Included” and $7.9 million for “We’re the Millers.”

“Planes” and “One Direction: This is Us” completed the top five with $4.3 million and $4.1 million, respectively.
