While talk of three separate films topping $50 million this weekend appears for naught, two of the films in the discussion will greatly exceed that threshold.
Based on Friday’s results, new releases “Monsters University” and “World War Z” should have no issue annihilating the $50 million mark. They earned $30.5 million and $25 million, respectively, in their debut dates, which gives them considerable breathing room in approaching that $50 million number.
At press time, the feeling is that “Monsters” could flirt with $80 million this weekend and score the second-highest debut for a Pixar film after “Toy Story 3.” “Z” should land in the low-to-mid $60 millions.
Down 71% from last Friday’s bow, “Man of Steel,” however, might have kissed its chances of earning $50 million this weekend goodbye. The film, which dominated the box office last week, earned only $12.7 million this Friday.
Still enough to claim third place, “Man of Steel” led “This is the End” ($4.1 million) and “Now You See Me” ($2.5 million).
