Candice Glover Wins “American Idol,” Becomes First Female Winner in Six Years

The era of the “white guy with guitar” is over.

For the first time in six years, no male performer was involved in the “American Idol” finale.  Consequently, for the first time in six years, “Idol” has a female winner.

Candice Glover Thursday became the show’s first female “Idol” since Jordin Sparks defeated Blake Lewis in season six.  Though weak ratings reflected minimal interest in the season, critics, fans and the show’s judges had nothing but raves for Glover, who dazzled with performances like “Lovesong” and “I, Who Have Nothing.”

Glover defeated Kree Harrison, a likable country-pop singer whose strong voice and low-key demeanor recalled Carrie Underwood, arguably “Idol”‘s most successful all-time winner.  But Harrison’s performances in Wednesday were no match for those of Glover, and the votes reflected the same.
