One does not necessarily expect a show to post a series low viewership for its season finale.
Unless, of course, that show is a young-skewing program positioned against the spring premiere of FOX’s “Empire.”
That was the challenge facing Wednesday’s first season “grown-ish” finale, which indeed delivered a series low live+same-day performance.
According to L+SD data posted by Showbuzz, Wednesday’s “grown-ish” drew a 0.17 adults 18-49 rating and averaged 0.40 million overall viewers. The series low numbers trail the 0.20 rating and 0.43 million viewer mark posted by the previous episode (at the time, those numbers were series lows).
While the “Empire” competition may excuse this particular week-to-week decline, “grown-ish” has definitely lost momentum in recent weeks. Whereas the show attracted an audience of 950,000 for its early January premiere, five of the past six installments posted viewership figures below 500,000.
Freeform — and the show’s creative force — will surely work to reinvigorate interest when the show returns for its confirmed second season.
