Update: Time-adjusted data is available, and it confirms a year-over-year loss for the Academy Awards ceremony.
It, moreover, reveals a nine-year low in total viewership.
According to the updated numbers, Sunday’s Oscars show drew a 9.1 adults 18-49 rating and averaged 32.9 million total viewers. From a live+same-day standpoint, it was the least-watched Academy Awards ceremony since 2008.
Last year’s show drew a 10.5 rating and 34.4 million in viewership.

While it was still a major attraction that will surely rank as one of the year’s top television telecasts, the 89th Academy Awards ceremony did not fare well in terms of typical Oscars standards.
Per overnight metered market data posted by Programming Insider, Sunday’s show drew a 21.4 overnight household rating.
Down from the 23.4 household rating drawn by last year’s ceremony, the figure ranks as the lowest since the 20.8 drawn by the 2008 show.
The ceremony’s adults 18-49 rating and viewership average will likely arrive Monday afternoon (the “fast national” data that emerges at 11AM ET will not account for the fact that the show aired live in all US time zones).
Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, Sunday’s show featured the most memorable conclusion in recent Oscars history as a card snafu resulted in “La La Land” being mistakenly announced as the Best Picture winner (“Moonlight” actually won, and time stood still as the “La La Land” team left the stage to allow for the other film’s celebration).
