Update: CBS touts Sunday’s 2016 Tony Awards Ceremony, which drew a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating and 8.73 million total viewers in the fast nationals, as the highest-rated Tony ceremony since 2003. It was the most-watched since 2001.

Update: Sunday’s Tony Awards ceremony enjoyed significant year-over-year gains in adults 18-49 and total viewership.
According to fast national data posted by Showbuzz, the primetime portion of CBS’ broadcast averaged a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating and 8.73 million total viewers.
Both numbers represent significant increases from last year’s show, which drew a 1.0 and 6.46 million.
They are, in fact, the best the show has posted in many years.
The year-over-year increase in adults 18-49 is particularly notable. It can be attributed to the prominent position of young-skewing musical “Hamilton” and the absence of NBA Finals competition.

Given the buzz surrounding “Hamilton: An American Musical” and absence of NBA Finals competition, the Tony Awards predictably posted a significant year-to-year gain in the overnight ratings.
According to metered market data posted by TVMediaInsights, Sunday’s show drew a 6.8 overnight household rating. Last year’s broadcast posted a 5.1.
Insofar as the younger-skewing “Hamilton” had such a big presence at this year’s show, many are expecting a similarly large — if not larger — increase in the key adults 18-49 demographic. A preliminary adults 18-49 rating is due by 11:15AM ET.
Last year’s show drew a weak 1.0 in the demo.
Across all demographics, the 2015 show drew an average of 6.46 million total live+same-day viewers. A preliminary viewership sum for this year’s show is also due just after 11AM ET.
Sunday’s show was dedicated to the victims of the Orlando shooting.
