“The Revenant” Wins Weekend Box Office, “Dirty Grandpa,” “5th Wave” Underwhelm

Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated “The Revenant” led a fairly light weekend box office.

The film earned an estimated $16.0 million in weekend receipts. Down 49.7% from the previous weekend’s tally, the mark is still enough to position “The Revenant” ahead of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which holds at #2 ($14.3 million).

“Ride Along 2,” last week’s winner, slips to #3 courtesy its #13.0 million.

Three new releases — “Dirty Grandpa” (#4, $11.5 million), “The Boy” (#5, $11.3 million) and “The 5th Wave” ($10.7 million) — occupy the next three slots. None of the three totals is impressive, but those for “Dirty Grandpa” and “The 5th Wave” are particularly underwhelming given their higher profiles.
