“Ant-Man” Edges “Pixels” For #1 at Box Office; “Paper Towns” Disappoints, Trails “Southpaw”

While it suffered a sizable 57% weekend-to-weekend drop, holdover champ “Ant-Man” still earned enough to retain its weekend box office title.

The superhero flick earned an estimated $24.8 million this weekend. That gives it a slight edge over new release “Pixels,” which premiered to the modest tune of $24.0 million.

“Pixels” claimed #1 on Friday but predictably trailed “Ant-Man” on Saturday and Sunday.

After two weeks, “Ant-Man” boasts a cumulative total of $106.1 million.

“Minions,” which held #2 last week, slips to #3 this week. It earned $22.1 million and now boasts a cumulative gross of $261.6 million.

Absent from the Top 5 on Friday, “Trainwreck” improved its position as the weekend progressed. It ends up at #4 on the strength of its $17.3 million second weekend. Its cumulative gross is now $61.5 million.

New release “Southpaw,” which trailed “Paper Towns” on Friday, bested it across the entire weekend. It scores #5 courtesy $16.5 million in weekend receipts.

A disappointing $12.5 million slots “Paper Towns” at #6 on the weekend chart. Going into the weekend, analysts expected a bow in the $18-23 million range.
