“50 Shades of Grey” Sizzles at Box Office, Dominates “Kingsman”

There was no grey area associated with the Friday box office race: “50 Shades of Grey” won in a predictable landslide.

The erotic drama earned an estimated $30.2 million Friday night. While its three-day weekend total hinges greatly on the extent to which moviegoers see “50 Shades” as an appealing Valentine’s Day date, it will undoubtedly rank as the weekend’s best.

Fellow new release “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” followed as Friday’s #2 film. It earned $10.5 million in its counter release position.

“The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” followed in third with $6.5 million, while “American Sniper” ($3.8 million) and “Jupiter Ascending” ($2.0 million) claimed the remaining top five positions.
