Whether evaluated from a macroscopic or microscopic perspective, Billboard’s all-encompassing Hot 100 is favorable to Taylor Swift and Meghan Trainor.
This particular week’s listing houses two songs from each singer-songwriter. Swift claims the #1 and #9 positions with “Blank Space” and “Shake it Off,” respectively, while Trainor’s “Lips are Movin” (#4) and “All About That Bass” (#5) both claim territory within the top five.
In retaining its #1 position, “Blank Space” earns a seventh consecutive week on top.
When it comes to the big picture, this week’s Hot 100 is the nineteenth consecutive chart to be ruled by a female track. Due exclusively to music released by Swift and Trainor, that streak began when “Shake it Off” debuted atop the Hot 100 this summer.
After two weeks on top, “Shake it Off” made room for Trainor’s Bass.” “Bass” spent eight weeks at the top, before allowing “Shake it Off” to return for two more. At that point, the reign of “Blank Space” began.
