“Gone Girl” Edges “Annabelle” at Weekend Box Office

Based on weekend estimates, it appears “Gone Girl” overtook fellow new release “Annabelle” to claim victory at the weekend box office.

After losing the opening night war, “Gone Girl” charged ahead on the strength of superior Saturday and Sunday performances. Estimates for the weekend say it earned $38 million, which gave it an $800,000 advantage over the horror film.

With $37.2 million in receipts, prequel “Annabelle” opened narrowly shy of the $41.9 million grossed by “The Conjuring” in its debut last summer.

“The Equalizer,” last week’s leader, claimed third this weekend with $19.0 million in receipts. “The Boxtrolls” grabbed fourth on the strength of $12.4 million, while “The Maze Runner” settled for fifth with a $12.0 million weekend gross.

“Left Behind,” the weekend’s other big new release, came in sixth place with $6.9 million.
