Ratings: “Agents of SHIELD” Tumbles 55% (Updated)

Update 2:  While still very disappointing–and still very far below last year’s series premiere mark–the final broadcast rating for Tuesday’s “Agents of SHIELD” premiere is better than what emerged in the fast national report.

The episode ultimately drew a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating with 5.98 million viewers.  Those numbers were down 55% and 51%, respectively, from their series premiere counterparts.

Update: The season two premiere of “Agents of SHIELD” drew a disappointing 1.9 adults 18-49 rating with 5.58 million viewers.

Both numbers were down significantly from those of the series premiere. That episode, which aired on September 24, 2013, drew a 4.7 with 12.12 million viewers.

Neither ABC’s network executives nor the show’s producers were subject to any illusion about the second season “Agents of SHIELD” premiere rivaling the ratings delivered by last September’s series opener.

Odds are good, however, that they were hoping for something better than what they got.

The Marvel drama returned with a mere 3.8 overnight household rating Tuesday. Down by more than 50% from last September’s series premiere rating, the number even trailed that delivered by ABC comedies “The Goldbergs” (6.0) and “Trophy Wife” (4.7) when they premiered in the corresponding 9PM hour last fall.

ABC’s Tuesday evening opened with “Dancing With the Stars” (7.0 overnight household rating) in the 8PM hour. Part two of the “Forever” premiere aired at 10PM and drew a 4.2 overnight number.

Adults 18-49 and total viewership data will be available shortly.
