Hot 100: Maddie & Tae’s “Girl in a Country Song” Hits New Peak

Maddie and Tae’s “Girl in a Country Song,” which is still cruising at radio and burnin’ it down on iTunes, rises to a new peak on the Billboard Hot 100.

Currently #23 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, #24 on the rolling Mediabase airplay chart and #49 on iTunes, “Girl” rises five places to #70 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Dismissed by some as either too polarizing for country radio or too much of a novelty to have staying power, the song works to silence its critics with each new chart peak. And insofar as the #70 peak will be forgotten when the song climbs to even loftier heights, “Girl in a Country Song” will continue to establish itself as one of 2014’s most noteworthy country launches.

Of assistance to the song’s climb will be a nationally broadcast performance on Friday’s edition of “Late Show with David Letterman.”

Thanks to its lyrics, which criticize the cliched objectification common to many “bro country” songs, “Girl in a Country Song” garnered vast mainstream attention when it launched in July. The mainstream fuss has died down, but its level of success within the country genre has continued to grow.
