Sam Smith Claims #1 at Hot AC, Alex & Sierra Reach Top 40

The reigning #1 song at Pop and Adult Contemporary radio adds another format to its empire.

According to Mediabase, Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” dethrones MAGIC!’s “Rude” to claim the #1 spot on Hot Adult Contemporary Radio. The song does so on the strength of the 6,693 spins and 43.90 million audience impressions it received at the format during the August 17-23 tracking period.

“Rude” slips to #2, besting fellow Top 5 entries from Maroon 5 (“Maps,” #3), Nico and Vinz (“Am I Wrong,” #4) and OneRepublic (“Love Runs Out,” #5).

Other movers at Hot AC this week:

— Disclosure’s “Latch (featuring Sam Smith)” climbs two places to #9.

Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” debuts at #10. Its arrival is the biggest in the history of the format.

— Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap” and Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” ascend into the Top 15 at #14 and #15, respectively. Save, obviously, for “Shake it Off,” the two songs were the biggest airplay gainers at Hot AC. “Bass” is up 799 spins this week, while “Boom” adds 378 to its count.

— Sia’s “Chandelier” reaches a new peak of #25.

— Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be (featuring Jess Glynne)” enters the Top 30 at #28.

— Katy Perry’s “This is How We Do” and Alex & Sierra’s “Scarecrow” go Top 40 at #34 and #40, respectively.

— Songs moving beneath the Top 40 include Matt Nathanson’s “Headphones (featuring LOLO)” (#41, +112 spins), Phillip Phillips’ “Unpack Your Heart” (#44, +114 spins) and GRL’s “Ugly Heart” (#48, +166 spins). The lattermost song is now featured as part of iHeartRadio’s “On the Verge” program.
