Two wide releases hit theaters this weekend, but only one delivered on expectations.
“Maleficent,” that film, opened to a healthy $70.0 million to claim first place at the box office.
While not as strong a performer as similar films “Alice in Wonderland” ($116.1 million) and “Oz: The Great and Powerful” ($79.1 million), it did outdeliver “Snow White and the Huntsman” ($56.2 million).
It also enjoyed a significant margin of victory over second place “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” Down 64% from last week’s opening tally, the film settled for $32.6 million in its second weekend of release.
New release “A Million Ways to Die in the West” managed just $17.1 million this weekend. Only enough for a third place finish, the total significantly trails the $54.4 million opening weekend tally earned by director Seth MacFarlane’s previous effort “Ted.”
That film also enjoyed considerably stronger reviews.
Down another 61%, “Godzilla” settled for fourth with $12.2 million. “Blended” landed in fifth with $8.4 million.
