After delivering its weakest season premiere ratings to date on January 8, USA Network’s “Psych” sank to a definitive series low for the follow-up on January 15. When the ratings did not significantly rebound for the January 22 edition, it became clear that “Psych” would not survive past its eighth season.
The news of “Psych'”s impending cancellation became official in February, but promotion for its final run did nothing to bring viewers back to the fold.
Despite being bundled as the show’s final run, none of the episodes between February 26 and March 19 drew a strong rating.
Predictably, neither did Wednesday’s series finale.
While the episode did enjoy gains over the penultimate segment’s performance, its 0.7 adults 18-49 with 1.93 million viewers would have been considered unremarkable for a regular episode in any previous season. As a season finale, it did nothing but confirm that for all the seasons of clever writing and charismatic performances, “Psych” no longer held America’s interest.
The ending was justified.
The “Psych” aftershow followed with a 0.4 and 1.03 million viewers.
