Update: Seth Meyers’ “Late Night” Scores Best Debut Since “Conan”

Update: Leading out of a solidly rated edition of “The Tonight Show” (2.1 adults 18-49 rating, 6.257 million viewers), the premiere of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” scored a 1.4 rating with 3.417 million viewers.

Both numbers were down significantly from those of the final “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” but they still represented the franchise’s best Monday performance since January 2005.

The 1.4 rating also represented the best debut number for a 12:05AM or 12:35AM talk show since “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” opened to a 1.7 in September 1993.

The good news? The premiere of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” delivered the franchise’s best Monday overnight rating in nine years.

The bad news? The premiere rating was down significantly from the rating for the final “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.”

Monday’s inaugural “Meyers” episode posted a 2.6 overnight metered market rating. Up 63% from the franchise’s season average and the best Monday performance since an encore aired out of a “Tonight Show” tribute on January 24, 2005, it was nonetheless down from the 4.8 posted by the final “Fallon” telecast on February 7.

In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, “Late Night with Seth Meyers” averaged a 1.2/8 in adults 18-49, which was the best for a Monday “Late Night” since June 1, 2009 (1.4, following Conan O’Brien’s “Tonight Show” premiere).

Earlier in the night, “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” which aired for the first time without Winter Olympics support, posted a 4.5 overnight rating. It scored a 2.1 adults 18-49 in the Top 25 markets.
