Her breakthrough smash “Royals” is still inescapable, but for Lorde, it is time to formally turn attention to the “Team.”
The teen singer-songwriter officially released the music video for follow-up single “Team,” which first debuted late this summer and has already ascended into the Top 10 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. In doing so, it helped Lorde become the first solo act since Alanis Morissette to reach the top ten with her first two alternative chart entries (“Royals,” which made waves on the Alternative chart before conquering the Hot 100, was the genre’s longest-reigning number one by a solo female).
A fan and critical favorite from debut album “Pure Heroine,” the single figured to be her best possible option of continuing “Royals”‘ incredible, multi-format momentum.
Commenting on the video, Lorde explained, “this video was borne from a dream i had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen. i dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. and of this world, i dreamt about tests that didn’t need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger. enjoy xx”
