Netflix Chief Talks Possible Third Season of “House of Cards”

Just in case some actually believed Netflix would passively wave goodbye to the face of its original programming division, content chief Ted Sarandos assured a concerned public that season three is a possibility.

According to Deadline, Sarandos confirmed “talks [for a third season] are in progress right now” shortly after announcing “It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons” at the Film Independent Forum.

Booked for an initial run of twenty six episodes over two seasons, “House of Cards” effectively launched the subscription service’s original content division. Since the Kevin Spacey vehicle debuted to a warm reception from viewers, Netflix has subsequently scored with fellow original “Orange is the New Black” and its exclusive fourth season of “Arrested Development.”

Though less buzzworthy, original series “Hemlock Grove,” like “Cards” and “Orange,” is also confirmed for a second season.

Because Netflix had not formally confirmed talks of a third season until this weekend, many, forgetting that programmers generally do not like to lose popular, Emmy-nominated content, assumed the high-profile project would culminate with its upcoming third season.

Sarandos’ comments confirm that Netflix will instead take the common sense approach and try scoring another season of “Cards.”
