Update: Wednesday’s two-hour “X Factor” attracted a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating with 7.75 million.
Well below this week’s “The Voice” numbers, Wednesday’s “The X Factor” performance is nonetheless welcome given the pessimism created by its disappointing season premiere.
While many, based on that low premiere rating, expected “Factor” to crash-and-burn once the other networks debuted their fall lineups, the show has actually added viewers in the face of such competition.

Though it got off to a very disappointing start, FOX’s “The X Factor” continues to demonstrate sturdiness in its two-hour Wednesday timeslot.
After rising to a season high on all metrics last Wednesday, this week’s edition–the first to feature the “4 Chair Challenge”–improved slightly to a new high in the overnight metered market ratings.
Whether that 4% improvement in the overnights will translate to stronger adults 18-49 and total viewership numbers remains to be seen, but the gain certainly suggests the show did not suffer any notable decreases in those areas.
It also reflects a third consecutive week of improvements in the overnights. Since premiering to a 4.7 for its hourlong telecast on September 11, the show’s ratings have steadily improved, jumping to a 5.1, a 5.5 and now a 5.7.
Music competition series often lose viewers once they move into the live performance rounds, so the ratings-challenged “The X Factor” is not out of the woods yet. That season five of “The Voice” is delivering far superior numbers for NBC certainly does not help matters.
By holding steady in the face of debuting network competition–and, in fact, improving–through its first four weeks of airings, however, “The X Factor” is at least contending that it has found a stable core audience.
