“Insidious 2” Dominates “The Family,” Set for Big Box Office Win

In pacing ahead of expectations, poorly-reviewed “The Family” will avoid the flop label–at least on its opening weekend.

Unfortunately, its debut haul will be dramatically overshadowed by that of “Insidious: Chapter 2,” which is set for a dominant box office victory.

Despite weak reviews of its own, the horror sequel earned about $20 million in its debut Friday. Stronger than expected, that total puts “Insidious 2” in position to earn $41-45 million for the weekend.

If that projection holds, it will triple the $13.3 million earned by the predecessor in its opening weekend.

The take will also obliterate the $15-16 million now expected from “The Family,” which earned a little over $5 million in its opening night.

Distance from first place aside, the total, which is better than the low-teens forecast by the studio, does not reflect a terrible start.
