With a top three that mirrors last week’s chart–Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” in first, followed by Katy Perry’s “Roar” and Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop”–the latest Billboard Hot 100 might not seem newsworthy.
But as one moves down the top ten, he finds a number of noteworthy developments.
Lady Gaga’s “Applause,” which some wrote off as a major disappointment due to its softer-than-expected iTunes opening, advanced to number four.
In its 52nd week on the chart, Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” dips one spot to number five. The track, which continues to reign on the Hot Rock Songs chart, is the only one outside of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” to claim a top five position a year into its Hot 100 run.
Jay-Z’s “Holy Grail” claims sixth on this week’s chart, just besting one of the week’s most notable stories. In climbing to number seven, “Wake Me Up” gives EDM favorite Avicii his first career Hot 100 top ten.
And Avicii was not the only artist to score his or her first top ten; via the “Summertime Sadness” remix, which claims ninth on this week’s chart (behind Capital Cities’ “Safe and Sound”), Lana Del Rey and Cedric Gervais also make debut appearances in the chart’s uppermost tenth.
Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” lands at number ten.
