“The Bridge” opened to modest viewership Wednesday, once again proving that solid reviews and an abundance of hype are simply not going to turn a dark, methodical, character-driven drama into a ratings blockbuster.
Based on preliminary ratings data, the new FX drama attracted 3.04 million viewers for its premiere airing and an additional 1.08 million for its immediate encore telecast. The initial broadcast attracted 1.16 million viewers in the adults 18-49 demographic, which should produce a 0.9 rating in that demo.
“The Americans,” which by virtue of its pacing, style and weighty content faced similar accessibility challenges despite rave reviews, opened this past winter to a 1.2 rating and 3.22 million viewers.
Despite settling into a ratings average significantly below its premiere number, “The Americans” ultimately earned a second season renewal from FX.
