Despite Buzz, “Sharknado” Flops in Ratings, Sequel Still Possible

Though it made significant waves with social networkers and the entertainment media, SyFy’s “Sharknado” had little bite when it comes to the television ratings game.

Thursday’s heavily-hyped broadcast scored a 0.4 adults 18-49 rating with 1.37 million viewers. While not necessarily bad by cable standards, that is hardly a performance befitting the vast amount of buzz the show received.

News of the show’s underwhelming ratings performance reaches the public hours after multiple outlets said SyFy was already contemplating a sequel to “Sharknado” movie.

Insofar as SyFy surely had a sense of the show’s viewership when it began looking into a sequel, one should not at all assume the ratings take that notion off the table.

He should, however, recognize that “Sharknado” was far from a major television event.
