“Catfish” Premieres Second Season to Solid Ratings Tuesday

Buzz over its first season did not turn MTV’s “Catfish” into a ratings juggernaut, but it assured the show’s second season got off to a solid start Tuesday.

The season premiere, which aired in the new Tuesday at 10PM timeslot, delivered a 1.4 adults 18-49 rating with 2.5 million Tuesday. Such numbers were in the same ballpark as its typical season one performance.

“Catfish” tied TNT’s premiere of “Rizzoli & Isles” as Tuesday’s top-rated cable original among adults 18-49 (the TNT series performed dramatically better in the total viewers column, however) and trailed only two TBS rebroadcasts of “The Big Bang Theory” (both of which garnered 1.5 ratings) on the overall cable ratings chart.

Though it did not parlay its buzz or new primetime slot into improved ratings, Tuesday’s “Catfish” managed to attract its usual audience without the plum “Teen Mom 2” lead-in support it was receiving on Mondays. Regardless of the show’s performance against expectations, that ability to self-start is definitely worthy of a feather in the cap.
