“G.I. Joe: Retaliation” Leads Box Office with Modest Gross; “Temptation,” “Host” Debuts

Delayed for retooling and a conversion into 3D, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” finds itself on the road to box office victory this weekend.

But victorious performances and impressive performances are two different things; thus far, “Retaliation” is only certain for the former.

After grossing $10.5 million Thursday, sources indicate it garnered an additional $15.5 million Friday. If the Friday estimate holds up, “Retaliation” would be on track for a four-day weekend total in the $45-50 million range.

Predecessor “The Rise of Cobra” opened to $54.7 million over three days in the summer of 2009. At the time, that was considered an underwhelming debut for the series, so it is unclear that Hollywood should react particularly favorably to the “Retaliation” gross.

On the plus side, “Retaliation” did receive an A- CinemaScore, which suggests favorable word-of-mouth is forthcoming.

— According to Deadline, very preliminary estimates say “Tyler Perry’s Temptation” will open to $9.4 million Friday as it builds towards a weekend tally of just over $20 million. “The Host,” meanwhile, was looking for $5.5 million Friday for a $15 million Easter haul.
