“Jack and the Giant Slayer” will easily win the weekend box office battle, but its actual gross will significantly disappoint.
The modestly-reviewed film earned only $7.7 million Friday and is likely poised for a weekend in the low-$20 millions. That would film’s opening tally notably below that of “John Carter,” the 2012 bomb to which “Jack” has been vastly compared.
Luckily, its first place finish was secured by virtue of other films similarly failing to perform this weekend. Poorly-reviewed “21 and Over,” promoted as something of a cross between “Project X” and “The Hangover,” earned only $3.3 million Friday. Set to gross less than $10 million for the weekend, its opening take will be significantly less than that for both “X” and “Hangover.”
“The Last Exorcism Part II” opened to $3.3 million, which represents a considerable decline from the $9.4 million mark posted by the first film in the summer of 2010.
