“Call Me Maybe” Finally Dials Number One, Dethrones Gotye

When taking into account buzz, parody, viral videos, airplay and sales, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” has realistically been the hottest song of the past several weeks. Unfortunately, the staying power of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” on the metrics Billboard tracks prevented “Maybe” from reaching the pinnacle of the Hot 100.

That finally changes this week, as the “Canadian Idol” alum’s hit finally advances to the top spot. Already the number one seller on iTunes, the track also jumped on the on-demand chart and airplay charts, landing at first and second respectively.

“Somebody” drops to number two on the Hot 100, still leading Maroon 5 & Wiz Khalifa’s “Payphone” and fun.’s “We are Young.” One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” moves into number five, sending Nicki Minaj’s “Starships” to 6.

Though the “Call Me Maybe” craze comes years after Jepsen’s debut album produced Canadian charting singles in “Bucket” and “Tug of War,” it represents her first Hot 100 entry in America. Jepsen becomes the first solo female to reach number one for a Hot 100 debut since Ke$ha did so with “Tik Tok” in 2010.
